Surrey Classics FC v Giant Panda
Topham Park
7th. December 2008

Weather: mild and cold at times, fine and rainy at times with a torrential downpour
Back in the swing........

The game against Giant Panda started about 30 minutes late due to a field mix-up with the opposition but when the whistle eventually went it was the Classics who were first out of the starting blocks. They took an early lead when a right wing break from 'Twin Tower forward number One' Doug Rosenlund resulted in an inch perfect cross onto the head of Chris Arcari who rose majestically to steer home a text book header for the opening goal as early as the third minute. It was just like watching Francesco Totti!

Three minutes later it was 'Twin Tower forward number Two' Chuck McGill's turn to score after he was put through but his effort was woefully wide of the mark. The team later decided to chip in and buy him a GPS for Christmas. However, McGill made amends in the 16th. minute after a left wing break from Jim Eden ended with a perfect centre to the noggin of McGill who steered a perfect header beyond the reach of the despairing Panda goalkeeper to make it 2-0.

With 20 minutes of the half left it was 3-0 to the home side after some more excellent work down the left flank from a revitalised Eden. The flying winger's run ended with him passing the ball through a packed defence to Rosenlund who, after a mini goalmouth scramble, sent a low roller into the net.

pioneersIn the 37th. minute Patty Rohla received a pass from Eden in the box and cleverly waited just long enough to elude any suspicion of off-side. He then evaded a bevy of players in the box to cooly roll the ball into the net for a fine taken goal. It was Eden's third assist of the game. The 4-0 half time score for the Classics was just desserts for an accomplished first half performance in which they dominated the proceedings. By this time the Giant Panda were wishing that they had been delayed another half-hour!

The second half started in rain which became heavier until it eventually turned into a deluge. Panda obviously had a strong half-time talk as they came out a better organised side but they still couldn't find any way through a stubborn Classics defence who had welcomed back the 'unreal' Hack into the fold. Midway through the half, the game was sewn up after a powerful shot from Rohla rattled inside the top right angle of the goalposts for his second and the team's fifth. With fifteen minutes left Danny Jensen was rightfully red carded after a sliding tackle sent a Panda attacker writhing over and clutching his leg. One could have blamed it on the conditions but the club have decided not to appeal on the grounds that it was deserved.

It was a return to winning ways for the Classics, after an uncharacteristic two game winless spell. The spirit is back and the boys are back in town.

Final Score 5-0 (4-0)
