New opposition put up a show........
Westside Volley travelled from UBC to James Hill for the first ever meeting between these two teams. The Volley had to wait for their numbers to arrive and subsequently the game kicked off five minutes late. The visitors could have taken an early lead after David Breen completely lost his footing in the third minute and presented an opposing forward with a straight one-on-one against the keeper. However, Jason Clegg was quick to recognise the danger and rushed out to hoof the ball away to safety. In the 10th minute a good break down the left witnessed Wayne Ferguson centre the ball to Jerry Szakun who laid the ball to Gordie Macklin who tried a delicate chip from 30 yards - however, he was only 20 yards from the goal so the ball sailed with the seagulls. Larry Thorlakson was next in the action but only because he did his 'dying swan' routine again and ended up Breen-like on the floor. Cries of left-then right-then left from the sideline didn't help his confidence.

On the quarter-hour Macklin did a nice little dummy and then released Ferguson who pushed the ball across the face of the goal to Szakun who was left with the simple task of tapping the ball home. Two minutes later an early cross from Willie Dixon landed straight on the head of Szakun who headed goalwards with a diver. The ball was heading home until it somehow hit his foot! Macklin put another one over the bar in the 21st minute. Ferguson got his first goal for the club midway through the half and he followed up to make it a brace ten minutes later. It was a well executed goal which began with Macklin on the left. He passed the ball to Jim Eden who chipped a delightful ball through for Ferguson to run on to. He did so with confidence and stroked a low shot to the left of the keeper to make the half time score 3-0 to the hosts.

Dixon took a right sided corner 10 minutes into the second half and Szakun rose to power home a delghtful header which was over the reach of the Volley's keeper. This killed the game with the Classics content to play out the remainder of time with some 'keep-the-ball' tactics. Fair play to the visitors who made the long journey with just enough players. They kept going till the end and were a credit with their spirit and will to not give in. It made for an enjoyable game and was a pleasure to be involved with.
