Persistence pays dividends........
The Classics had to dig deep into the reserves for this performance. Never an easy game against the old foe, Alemania put on a fair amount of pressure in the first half with their running and shooting and could have taken the lead on a couple of occasions. Collin Ashton, deputising in goal for the second week, pulled off some remarkable saves to keep the Classics in the hunt. Alfie Deglan missed a couple of sitters when it looked easier to score but the half ended all square, a fair result on the reflection of play.
The second half was also an evenly balanced contest but Alemania took the lead in the 55th. minute with a well struck shot after a good run into the box. Ashton could not perform his heroics this time 0-1. The Classics were level 10 minutes later after Bill McAuley was brought down in the goalkeepers box after a tussle for the ball. No-one volunteered to take the penalty kick so it was left for Jim Eden who stepped up and blasted the kick straight in the middle of the goal. The goalie had dived to his left. 1-1.
In the 70th. minute McAuley tore away on a run into the box. He rounded the goalkeeper and cooly placed the ball in the net from a very acute angle. 2-1. Alemania were level in the 80th. minute. After some pressure, an attacker shot on goal but Dave Moore booted the ball off the line. Seconds later the ball was in the net when a high shot eluded Ashton. 2-2.
It seemed to be heading for a draw until Eden was deftly put through by Chuck McGill. Eden made no mistake as he rifled a shot from 25 yards high into the roof of the net. 3-2. Game over. The Classics packed the defence for the last five minutes and managed to sustain the pressure as they were in no mood to concede the game.
