Good all round performance seals victory........
The Classics returned back to action after the long weekend with a home game against Delta United. Fielding two new trainees in Ron Jennings and Tom Lowe it was a different type of line up for the Classics. Hackel was also absent so Martin Chipperfield deputised in goal for the first half, with Chas Jones taking over for the second half.
The game started briskly enough and the Classics took the lead in the seventh minute after a great throw-in from Jones found Billy Ranger near the dead ball line. Ranger turned his marker and sent over a glorious centre to the feet of Ray Marrington who was lurking in the danger area. Marrington cooly slipped the ball to the right of the goalkeeper and into the corner of the net for the opener. The score remained at 1-0 until the tenth minute of the second half when a long free-kick from Chipperfield was chested to the goalkeepers left by Ranger for the second. The Classics were knocking the ball about with ease with everyone working hard to keep the pressure on United. Delta only had one worthwhile effort in the second half which was fluffed. The match was sealed by Jim Eden who, seeing the goalkeeper in no-man’s land, chipped a delightful shot into the net from all of 30 yards to put the game beyond Delta.
